Tips to improve your Children’s Oral Health

Taking care of your children and their health is a full-time job. Thankfully, that job is easier today than ever before given the wide range of resources that are made available to you. The internet is a great place to turn for  tips on maintaining your child’s optimum health as well as improving your child’s oral health.

Your child’s oral health is incredibly important. Their teeth help them eat properly, talk, and having strong teeth can prevent disease, dental problems, and infections. But maintaining strong teeth comes down to improving your child’s oral health routine on a regular basis. Developing good habits as your child grows will set them up for success long-term.

Give them control

One of the easiest ways to develop better oral health habits is to make things fun for your children and give them control over simple things like choosing their own toothbrush in a color that they like. You can also make it fun by locating toothbrushes with characters they love. Similarly, let them choose a toothpaste flavor that they prefer. Help them keep track of important things like time; 2 minutes can seem like a lifetime to children, a fact that every parent who has put a child in timeout is well acquainted with. So, you can help them keep track of how long they have brushed their teeth or how often they have lost their teeth using things like timers or playing their favorite song. If you set it up so that they have one song they love, they can press play on that song every time they go to brush their teeth and enjoy some fun dancing all while improving their oral hygiene.

Make it fun

Make oral health a fun part of your child’s daily routine. Most children don’t necessarily love the idea of going to the dentist. In fact, neither do most adults. But, if you regularly plan something positive like getting ice cream or an extended outing to the local zoo after each appointment, children will grow to appreciate the fun and reward that comes from doing the right thing. As you give your child rewards not just for going to the dentist but for any activity or achievement throughout their daily lives, avoid sugary treats. Give them rewards that are beneficial for their oral hygiene like apple slices or even a gold star that they can keep on a chart in their room.

Use the products your dentist provides

Your dentist relies on dentist equipment wholesale products to distribute during each of your dentist appointments.  Your dentist might have the right size, shape, or brand of toothbrush and toothpaste which will make it easier for you to find a flavor down the line that your child loves or a color that they prefer. Similarly, your dentist can recommend improved fluoride products to reduce cavities in your child’s baby teeth. You might need oral fluoride toothpaste or you might need to reduce the fluoride toothpaste your child uses if they are prone to swallowing their mouthwash or toothpaste. Discuss oral health

Parents might find time here and there to talk about why children have to eat their broccoli or their vegetables. When these complaints arise at the kitchen table, this is the perfect opportunity for laying the groundwork over healthy eating habits. And the same thing should be applied to healthy oral hygiene habits. Make time to discuss dental hygiene. There are things like videos and books that you can view or read together but teach children simple things like how long they should brush their teeth, when they should brush their teeth, and why.

Go to the dentist

If you notice problems with your child’s oral health, go to your dentist as soon as you can. Cavities can happen when bacteria build up in the mouth, and are more prevalent in children simply because it’s harder for children to reach all of their teeth and brush them properly. So if you see that your child is developing spots on their teeth, or they complain of pain in between their regular appointments, don’t necessarily wait for things to get worse before you take them in just for a quick check up. Sometimes the sooner you get help for certain oral conditions, the less likely they are to turn into a serious problem for your child and dissuade them from going to the dentist regularly.
