Review of the Reformer class at Millie Dobie Pilates…

January has arrived and every year it happens to me…

Post-Christmas guilt starts to burden my thoughts, the sore feeling of over-indulgence lingers throughout my body and usually I feel the regret of one too many glasses of fizz over the festive period… this year happens to be no different.

To be brutally honest, I am bored of running on that treadmill that just doesn’t get you anywhere.

Making a pleasant change from the gym, I was very excited to be invited along to attend Millie Dobie’s Pilates reformer class, and trust me, a class or two of reformer Pilates will have you in shape quicker than you think possible. I have always wanted to try Pilates, not the mat class, but the real deal on the reformer machines.

Reformer Pilates is similar, yet very different to mat based Pilates. It is done using the machine and is generally more intense and more dynamic than mat based Pilates as it adds resistance to the Pilates exercises via the use of the springs, which form part of the machine. A class on the reformer is excellent to help with rehabilitation from injury or general wear and tear, especially for the lower back and is suitable for all levels of fitness. The reformer can train many parts and dynamics of the body in so many different ways with just one relatively sleek piece of equipment, and in Millie’s studio she uses the best high quality STOTT PILATES Reformers.

Lasting 1 hour, a session begins with a simple warm-up ensuring you gently stretch your muscles and avoid any injuries, before moving onto a structure of exercises designed to lengthen, strengthen and push you to change your body shape. I was told to squeeze my ribs in and scoop my abdominals, schooled on my posture, working muscles I wasn’t even aware I owned!

It was challenging, both in terms of working my muscles and also forcing myself to pay particular attention to how every inch of my person was aligned, and having Millie right their to coach me ensured I was doing it correctly. Millie is a wonderful instructor, correcting your technique and pushing you to get the most from your body. I would definitely do a class again, I would urge you to try one.
