Nursery and Post Birth Room Makeover

By Rachel Ducker

Having a new baby is life-changing.

When I had my first son two years ago, my birth didn’t go exactly to plan and I ended up having an emergency c-section.

At the time we returned home, due to having renovations works done, I didn’t have the relaxing and peaceful surroundings I needed to make me feel like I had space to recover or most importantly, to nurse in my own space.

So this time round, now eight months pregnant with my second son, I am prepared. I have decided to move out into the guest room for a short while and to give it a little makeover, creating the perfect nursery and recovery space for me and the new baby.

The room was already painted in Farrow and Ball [colours Dimpse, Blackened and Manor House Grey on the fireplace feature wall] so I touched up areas that needed it. I also had a massive declutter – an ideal time for a car boot sale.

Then on to the makeover – first of all – the most important thing, somewhere to rest and sleep.

The Bed – DUSK Bedding

I am a huge fan of DUSK not only for their style of bedding but also the quality of it.

I found some white waffle designed duvet covers and pillows, I find they crease less and are easy to iron for quick bedding changes, which may be required post recovery. I then used their Manhattan range in putty to add a touch of muted colour in a satin finish. I added a large bedspread and four all sorted pillows / cushions.

I am a person who loves to layer pillows, (what girls doesn’t)? – so I also found these Venice oxford pillow cases on DUSK which have the putty colour as an accent around the edges, I found it tied everything together. You can never have enough pillows!

Now, anyone who’s ever had stomach surgery (or any kind of surgery) will tell you that you will be spending a lot of time in bed, so let’s make that time comfortable!

DUSK also do a range of mattress toppers which add another layer of soft comfort in-between your top sheet and mattress.

This Goose Down Topper transforms your bed into a pool of softness, ideal for any body that needs TLC.

Combine it with these super soft sheets and your recovery time will soon feel like your in a luxury hotel, rather than a room at home.

The Baby Crib – Stokke Sleepi

No nursery is complete without a crib, so this multipurpose room deserved one which was adult enough to work with the rest of the scheme. Plus, being a smaller room in a cottage it also needed to fit.

The Stokke Sleepi is the ideal crib that grows with your baby and eventually turns into a bed. I love its distinctive oval shape and it fits my alcove of the fireplace perfectly.

I also went for the ‘add-on’ canopy for some extra light protection as this is closer to the window than I would have liked it, (my healthcare visitor will no doubt have something to say)! It also adds softness and I think it looks pretty sweet.

For those early days when I will want the baby as close to me as possible, this moses basket from The Little Green Sheep fits next to the bed. I had one with my first son and found it the best close to me crib for a small baby.

The Furniture – Oakfurniture Land

Storage space is essential for any bedroom – but it doesn’t mean it can’t also be apart of the rooms appeal. I invested in this 3 door wardrobe in Shay from Oakfurniture Land. Its beautiful, spacious and fit into my cottage bedroom just perfectly.

Also pictured in this image is my flatscreen TV which I mounted onto the wall with the help of my wonderful husband. You cannot have a recovery room without Netflix bingeing!

I also added the tallboy for additional storage – perfect for nappies / muslins / creams and all the other stuff that you need for a newborn.

Underbed Rug

By adding a rug under the bed it softens the area of the wooden floor. The last thing you want during your recovery is a hard cold floor to step on.

For that added bit of home comfort no bedroom is complete without a pair of sheepskin slippers.

Nursery Touches

Having some personalised wall art really makes a nursery unique, (I have removed my baby name off this photo as I don’t want to spoil the surprise just yet), but I would really recommend this Etsy shop! Friendly, quick and great quality prints.

Wall Prints – Paper Rose Prints

I love having a baby outfit on display – they are just super cute, so I have a range from my favourite brand Mamas and Papas. Here’s a few of my favourites.

I also wanted to display some of these beautiful products I was sent from Joone Paris. They work really well on my fireplace shelf and are convenient for when I need them.

After surgery everyone needs a super soft towel, so these luxury towel from Tielle do just the job.

Loved by 5* spas and hotels for their softness, absorbency and colourfast dye technology that locks colour in, these 550gsm super soft Turkish cotton towels instantly amp up the luxe factor. Perfect for replicating the spa experience in the comfort of your own home.

Final Touches

To add a little interest to the walls, in ‘Love Island’ style I added some decorative words that would encourage me to relax.

The first is this one “Sweet Dreams” – it was easy to put up with some double sided tape.

I also fell in love with this “Get Cosy” wire sign in rose gold.

No room is complete without scent and flowers.

This bouquet from Serenata Flowers, not only are they long lasting but smell incredible – adding to the calmness you need in the room.

Speaking of smells this diffuser from DUSK also brings the senses alive!

Finally what recovery room is complete without a box of tissues and this tissue cover from Crackpots is just ideal!

I hope my room makeover has been helpful and has given some great ideas for a post recovery room and nursery.
