Basel was this month named the 14th Best Small City in the World by Monocle Magazine, based on their Small Cities Index. A cool European city, Basel’s Christmas market at Barfüsserplatz is also considered one of the biggest and prettiest in Switzerland. Spreading from the steps of BarfüsserKirche into the square, the market has lots of lovely little stalls peddling their wares and delicious treats aplenty.

Leipzig’s tradition of Christmas Markets dates back to 1458, making the market in the central Augustusplatz one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. It is also one of the largest and most beautiful of the country’s markets, with 300 stands and the unique backdrop of Leipzig’s culture and gastronomy. The market runs until 23 December.

The Dutch capital is strongly associated with ‘SinterKlaas’ (St. Nicolas) and they’re dedication to the Christmas market is no surprise. From December 21 this year, Amsterdam’s large convention center- RAI Amsterdam – will be transformed into Winter Paradise. This indoor/outdoor extravaganza will have a carousel, skating rinks, curling, ice racing, VR experiences and even the iconic Coca-Cola Truck.

The sun-soaked city in Catalonia may not be the first place to spring to mind when one thinks of Christmas markets, but the Fira de Santa Llucia is a Christmas-time tradition that has roots in Barcelona as far back as 1786. The celebration showcases beautifully crafted nativity scenes and plenty of artisanal stands with a plethora of gifts and treats on offer. Visitors can expect a uniquely Catalan take on a Christmas fair. The market is open until 23 December.

The Polish capital is a much-loved winter destination and Motel One recently opened their very first Polish location in the heart of the city.
