In the spring of 2018, after more than two decades of working in the fashion industry (running their own creative consultancy, 2Som Studio since 2004), husband and wife design duo Alex Sommer and Laura Keller decided to apply their creative passion to something new.
From a little man-cave concrete tinkering, inspiration was born. He inspired her with his concrete creations which made her start thinking about wax. Some girl-time candle-making experiments followed and after much R&D, prototyping, sampling and testing we can now say assuredly, HE is Mr Concrete and SHE is Mrs Wax. They softly launched the collection on their website in November 2018.
“We fully embrace the fact that the concrete will always outlast the candle so each holder is also designed to fit any standard tea-light and the pot lid can hold up to three.” Mrs Wax.
The holders take four weeks to create. From pouring, curing to finishing they are hand made in small batches to ensure quality. The concrete finish has a beautifully smooth and semi-polished look; each surface has slightly different characteristics with natural colour variations. They are available in several colour options including three striking camouflage colourways. Each piece is a truly unique concrete creation.
The soy candles come in four fragrances: Lime, Basil & Mandarin; Sandalwood & Black Pepper; Amber Noir; and Tobacco & Oak, with further fragrances under development. The beeswax candles have a subtle honey aroma. Each is stamped with a batch-code on the base for full traceability.
Prices begin at £18 for small pillar candles to £30 for a large three-wick candle (burning time up to 45 hours). The holders begin at £22 for a slim holder to £55 for a pot with lid.
All products are hand poured in their Suffolk workshop and materials are locally sourced.
“We are passionate that our product remains manufactured locally and that we keep our footprint as small as possible.” Mr Concrete.
Currently, CONCRETE&WAX is available online at www.concreteandwax.com and in a select few UK stockists.
