Freak Power was originally formed in the early nineties by Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, Ashley Slater and vocalist Jesse Graham.
As the love child of Cook’s Beats International (‘Dub Be Good To Me’) and Slater’s seminal cult band Microgroove, their music was a mix of acid jazz, funk, soul and trip hop. They recorded their first studio album in Brighton in 1993, using a combination of tunes adapted from what was originally intended to be two albums – the Beats International follow up to Excursion on The Version and the Microgroove follow up to The Human Groove.
Freak Power went on to have a massive hit in the UK with ‘Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out’ (used in a TV advert for Levi’s jeans) and released two albums, Drive-Thru Booty and More of Everything for Everybody.
As Cook’s Fatboy career took off, Slater went his own way and released music under the alias Dr. Bone. He also produced the Oscar nominated soundtrack for the Dave McKean/Neil Gaiman movie Mirrormask (2005) and won DJ Magazine’s award for Best Dance Track 2006 – ‘Bass Phenomenon’ with Krafty Kuts and Tim Deluxe.
Fast forward 20 something years, and Ashley is back with a Freak Power band which features some of the great original players from early Freak Power and Microgroove days. At their powerful, energetic live show on 14 March, they will play some of their older tunes, along with material from their new EP release ‘Peace Through War’.
