Five years ago this month, an idea ignited and from this small flame came the very first edition of Bounce Magazine.
Starting a business is never an easy task and it could go one of two ways. Luckily for us, we are still here and we have made it past the five-year point. To find out more Lucy Jones interviews founder of Bounce, Rachel Ducker, about the magazine and how it started.
What made you want to launch your own magazine?
Along with Bounce, I run a website and marketing agency called Apparition Marketing & Design. At the time I launched Bounce, there was nowhere affordable I could advertise in the area, so I thought why not create something?
Did you know how to run a magazine?
Absolutely not! I had experience in magazine sales from my first job at a print company, those connections helped from that perspective. I could design, but apart from that I can honestly say I made it up as I went along.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Being very honest, I made the mistake of taking on a business partner and giving them shares in the company, a year later as a result of this, I ended up buying back a part of a company I created. It was a very difficult time, but I learnt a good lesson!
What has been the best moment?
There have been so many; I think when Bounce Magazine won ‘Best Magazine Design’ at the Association of Independent Magazine Publishing Awards.
What about your biggest breakthrough moment?
When I woke up one day and decided to include celebrity interviews in the magazine. I didn’t know how I was going to do it but to actually achieve it that was a huge thing for Bounce.
It must be great to interview your favourite celebs?
For me personally, I find it so nerve racking! I end up sounding like a right geek; if you don’t believe me you can listen to them online here https://www.youtube.com/bouncemagazineuk
How can you sum up Bounce?
Bounce has become my baby, I love waking up everyday and having the opportunity to work on it. I hope people find it a cheerful publication with lots of interesting things inside! I want to take the time to say a big thank you to the people who support Bounce, our client’s and our longest standing client Mr Abdus Shahid. Our contributor’s and in particular, Mr Ross Wishart (AKA Action Man), our fashion guru Zena Battersby and not forgetting our little Archie! A big thank you also to all of our readers, without you it wouldn’t be worth it!
