More than 170 triathletes put themselves through a gruelling physical challenge in the Beccles sunshine on 4th June.
The 5th Beccles Triathlon attracted a mixture of first timers and seasoned triathletes including several TeamGB triathletes and local pro Joe Skipper, who won the race in a new course record of 1:01:32, despite receiving a 10 second penalty for nudity!
Despite being one of the regions newest triathlons, it was awarded Triathlon England East Region’s club event of the year award last year and places for 2017 sold out in less than 2 hours!
A strong field competed in front of 100s of spectators at the Lido and around the course, swimming 480 metres in Beccles Lido, before cycling a 20.3 kilometre loop to Bungay and back, then running 6.7 kilometres along a scenic route around the Waveney riverbank to the finish line at the Lido.
The fastest female competitor was Beccles Triathlon Club’s Vicki Grice in a time of 1:22:37 and the winning relay team was The Hangover in 1:08:36.
Vicky Beck, race director, said: “It was a superb event and it was lovely to see both top athletes and beginners taking part, as well as the local community turning out in support.
“The committee would like to thank the many sponsors that supported this year’s event, but a special, heartfelt thanks goes to the many volunteers marshals, officials and committee members who gave up their time to make this complex event look easy. It really is a team effort.”
The Beccles Triathlon is one of the Lido’s big annual fundraisers and this year the Lido is looking to raise over £100,000 for a new toilet block.
In addition to events like the Triathlon and the Beccles Beer Festival scheduled for 17-19 November, they have launched an online fundraising page which has already raised in excess of £4,000 bring the grand total raised so far to nearly £50,000!
